Audience

Lists, tags and audience exports

Build useful segments without changing consent or importing outside contacts.

Choose the right grouping

Built-in lists describe standard audience groups and have live counts. Smart lists are saved filters, so membership changes as contacts match or stop matching. Manual lists are explicit collections of existing contacts. Tags are labels attached to individual profiles and can also be used for targeting or automation.

Use a smart list when the rule matters, such as a filtered subscriber view. Use a manual list for a deliberate selection that should not be recalculated from a rule. Neither form of membership grants marketing consent.

Create and populate a list

Create a manual list from Lists with a distinct name. Add an existing contact from the list page or the contact's profile. On Subscribers, tick the intended people and use the bulk add/remove action with a manual list. Confirm which page of contacts you selected; do not assume every filtered result was selected.

To create a smart list, filter Subscribers and use Save as smart list. Review its matching contacts before using it for a broadcast. Built-in list names are fixed; custom lists can be renamed or deleted.

Tags and removal

Open a subscriber profile to add or remove tags. Removing a tag or a manual membership is a segmentation change, not deletion of the contact and not global unsubscribe. Deleting a custom list leaves its contacts in the audience. There is no import from an external email list; the add-by-email field only finds a contact already present on this website.

Before deleting a list or tag used in an automation, review dependent sequences and draft broadcasts so the intended audience remains clear.

Export and send

Use the subscriber CSV export or a list's export for the relevant view. Store exported personal data securely and share it only for an appropriate purpose. Exporting data does not create consent to contact it from another service.

For broadcasts with include and exclude lists, exclusions are applied and recipients are deduplicated. Review the count shown before sending; adding the same contact through two lists does not mean they should receive two copies. See Broadcasts for the send workflow.
